Organizing your Lab Work Bench

If you work in a laboratory environment, then you know how essential organization is. Without organization, a lab can be chaos as scientists try to find chemicals or materials needed to complete projects and testing in a timely manner. For a busy scientist to stay organized, a tidy workbench is needed. Learning how to organize your lab workbench will ensure you can be successful throughout the day. Below are a few tips to get you started.

Tool Organization

When it comes to the tools you use regularly, such as pipettes, keep these items on the side of your bench that coincides with your dominant hand. If you are left handed on the left and right-handed on the right. This way, you can line up your tools and you can easily reach what you need when you need it.

Trash Ready

When working on experiments, you will have trash. Have a small can located next to your workbench so you can easily throw items away. Empty the bin at the end of the day if needed so you can start fresh the next day.

Stands and Containers

If you use organizational containers or stands for your experiments on your workbench, have these items located at the back of your bench. Keep the center of the table open so that you can easily begin a new experiment as you like.

Avoid Dirty Notes

To keep track of all your ideas and experiment outcomes, notes are needed. Taking notes can easily be done with a notebook but be sure to keep your notebook out of reach from your main working area. You can easily spill something on your notes which will result in lost work.
